Help! I Found Kittens
Before you pick them up, stop and assess the situation. Healthy kittens that appear unattended are often being cared for by their mother nearby. In most cases, leaving kittens with their mother gives them the best chance of survival.
Step 1: Are the Kittens in Immediate Danger?
Take action immediately if:
- The kittens are injured or sick.
- The mother is deceased.
- They are in traffic or another hazardous location.
- They are exposed to extreme weather.
- Loose dogs, wildlife, or other threats are present.
If the kittens appear healthy and safe, continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Wait for Mom
Mother cats frequently leave their kittens while searching for food and may be gone for several hours.
- Move at least 35 feet away.
- Observe from a distance.
- If possible, check back periodically for several hours.
Do not assume the kittens have been abandoned.
Step 3: If Mom Returns
If the mother returns and the area is reasonably safe:
- Leave the kittens with her.
